Penn State is gearing up for the 2026 football season, a campaign that promises to reshape the program under first‑year head coach Matt Campbell. The Countdown to Kickoff series highlights players whose uniform numbers correspond to the days remaining until the season opener, and with 85 days left the focus has turned to former defensive standout Ollie Ogbu, now a coach.
The Nittany Lions have added more than 50 new players to the roster, a move that has reshaped the depth chart and injected fresh competition into spring practices. The influx of talent reflects Campbell’s early recruiting impact and sets the stage for a season that analysts expect to open inside the Top 25 national rankings.
From Defensive Anchor to Coach
Ogbu’s football journey began on Staten Island, where he starred for St. Joseph’s By the Sea before attending Milford Prep to improve his academics. A 4.9‑second 40‑yard dash and a 225‑pound bench press of 20 reps caught the eye of Penn State assistant Brian Norwood, who recommended the youngster to the university.
He redshirted in 2006, then emerged as a fixture on the defensive line from 2007 through 2010. During that span he recorded 78 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, earning second‑team All‑Big Ten honors in 2010 and serving as team captain in his senior year.
After going undrafted in 2011, Ogbu signed with the Indianapolis Colts before brief stints in the Canadian Football League and the Arena Football League, playing for the Montreal Alouettes, San Jose SaberCats and Los Angeles Kiss. He later transitioned to coaching, starting at Montana State University (Northern) in 2018 and moving through Blinn College, New Haven, Wagner, Lake Erie, Adams State and Long Island University.
A New Chapter on the Coaching Staff
Today Ogbu serves as a defensive line coach at Long Island University, where he works with a unit that includes several of the program’s newest recruits. His blend of on‑field experience and analytical approach is expected to help the team integrate its expanded roster as Campbell’s first season unfolds.
The combination of a deep coaching pedigree and a revitalized roster positions Penn State to make a strong debut under Campbell. As the countdown to kickoff continues, the program’s blend of veteran leadership and fresh talent promises a compelling story for fans and analysts alike.
