Jamie Spurgeon, a 6‑4, 205‑pound tight end and quarterback from Minarets High School in O’Neals, California, announced his commitment to the University of California, Berkeley, to play both football and baseball in the class of 2027.
A Dual‑Sport Commitment
Spurgeon’s decision to join the Golden Bears reflects a rare blend of gridiron grit and diamond precision, as he has excelled at both positions throughout his senior year.
On the football field he threw for 1,600 yards and 11 touchdowns while also rushing for 644 yards and seven scores, and he caught a single pass for 22 yards. On the mound he logged 63 innings with a 3.22 ERA, striking out 104 batters and walking only 26.
His baseball stats were equally impressive: a .512 batting average, a .921 slugging percentage, 51 runs batted in, 20 doubles, seven triples and six home runs.
Spurgeon also earned a state championship with his high school baseball team and attracted interest from several Power Five programs, including Texas Tech, Utah and Boston College, before narrowing his focus to Berkeley.
A Growing 2027 Roster
He becomes the 21st member of Cal’s 2027 recruiting class, a group that already includes standouts such as Dane Weber, Charles Davis III, Demare Dezeurn, Blake Gunter, Jaxsen Stokes, AJ Antwon Sanders, Rahzario Edwards, Amaziah Siale, Isaiah Bertola, Josh Bunni, Troy Bowens, Jaderian Jones, Miles Schirmer, Giovanni Hodge, Elyjah Staples, Gunnar Perry, Duvay Williams, Myles Baker and Zach Brien.
Coach’s Perspective
Cal’s coaching staff praised Spurgeon’s versatility and work ethic, noting that his ability to contribute immediately on both sides of the ball could bolster the program’s depth as it aims for a competitive season in the coming years.
Looking Forward
With a blend of arm strength, speed and clutch hitting, Spurgeon is expected to make an early impact for the Golden Bears, and his commitment signals a continued pipeline of multi‑sport talent heading to Berkeley.
