NDSU lifts postseason ban after FBS transition, eyes bowl eligibility

Financial commitments and a NCAA waiver clear the way for the Bison to compete in postseason bowl games

North Dakota State University’s football program has cleared a major hurdle as the NCAA Division I Cabinet voted to lift the two‑year postseason ban that had shadowed the Bison since their move to the Football Bowl Subdivision.

The decision, announced on Tuesday, permits NDSU to qualify for bowl games once it reaches six victories in a season, a milestone that could reshape the team’s recruiting narrative and fan engagement.

The relief comes after the university committed $12.5 million to the Mountain West Conference and relinquished future media revenue shares through 2032, a financial sacrifice that was part of a broader strategy to smooth the transition.

The policy change also extends to several other institutions, including the University of Delaware, Missouri State University and James Madison University, each of which will serve reduced penalties compared with the original two‑year sanction.

Adding to the excitement, NDSU is slated to open its season on August 29 against Jacksonville State, a program that recently posted back‑to‑back nine‑win campaigns and captured the 2023 New Orleans Bowl title.

Head coach Tim Polasek voiced his enthusiasm, stating that postseason eligibility is a ‘game‑changer’ for player development and retention, while quarterback Nathan Hayes echoed the sentiment, noting that the prospect of bowl participation keeps the roster motivated.

Athletic director Matt Larsen had previously advocated for a review of the rule, and Mountain West commissioner Gloria Nevarez pledged to work with NDSU to secure a waiver that would further ease the path to postseason play.

A new chapter for NDSU football

With these developments, the Bison look poised to turn a period of restriction into a springboard for future success on the national stage.
