Rick Raven, the longtime head of athletic equipment at the University of Illinois, has spent 31 years turning the mundane work of gear management into a craft that binds teams together.
He began his career not on a polished staff but as a student manager and equipment assistant, learning the ropes while still in college.
In 1995 he was hired as an assistant women’s equipment manager, a role that would become the foundation of a three‑decade tenure overseeing gear for women’s basketball, soccer, softball, track and field, and wrestling.
Over the years Raven has become known for his willingness to sew, alter, and fine‑tune uniforms, ensuring that every jersey and pair of shoes meets the exacting standards of coaches and athletes alike.
One of his guiding principles is to preserve uniform colors during a winning streak, a small ritual that reflects his belief in continuity as a catalyst for success.
His ingenuity surfaced when he customized Adidas shoes with Nike logos for a player battling foot problems, a blend of resourcefulness and care that left a lasting impression on the team.
