A Night of Strategy and Speed
Shane van Gisbergen secured his eighth road‑course victory in the NASCAR Cup Series at Sonoma Raceway, a performance that underscores his dominance on twisty layouts and ties him with Tony Stewart for second on the all‑time road‑course wins list behind Jeff Gordon.
The New Zealander fended off a late charge from Chase Briscoe, who finished second, while Ty Gibbs, who led the early stages, settled for third after a strategic pit stop. Kyle Larson and Connor Zilisch also turned heads with strong runs that kept the competition fierce.
Van Gisbergen’s win was built on masterful tire management and a perfectly timed caution, allowing him to pull ahead in the final ten laps — a pattern that has defined the last two Sonoma races. His pole position earlier in the weekend marked the first time a pole winner has captured the Sonoma victory since 2004.
The race formed part of the In‑Season Challenge, a stretch that will also take drivers to Chicagoland, Atlanta and North Wilkesboro before the finale at Indianapolis. The event was televised on TNT after the series moved its broadcast home from Prime Video to NBC.
Beyond the winner’s circle, the night highlighted the unique challenges of the Sonoma road course, which features more than 160 feet of elevation change. Milestones such as AJ Allmendinger’s 500th Cup start and Bubba Wallace’s rear‑field start after a qualifying incident added extra intrigue.
