Axel Logistics and Tennessee Athletics Ink Five-Year Jersey Sponsorship

Deal Exceeds $3 Million Annually, Showcases Alumni-Led Logistics Firm’s Commitment to UT Sports

Tennessee Athletics announced a five-year agreement that will bring Axel Logistics onto the front of its basketball jerseys, a move that underscores the university’s growing ties with homegrown enterprises.

A Deal Rooted in Community

Axel Logistics, a Knoxville-based third-party logistics provider, has built a reputation for handling truckload, less-than-truckload, intermodal and warehousing operations across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The firm, founded by University of Tennessee alumni, is also one of the largest employers of UT graduates, a fact that has helped shape its deep connection to the campus community.

The collaboration was brokered through the Vol Network, a Learfield division that specializes in connecting collegiate athletics with strategic partners. This arrangement not only adds a commercial revenue stream of more than $3 million per year for the athletics department, but also aligns with Axel’s stated mission of innovation and community support.

Danny White, UT’s Athletic Director, praised the partnership, noting that Axel’s “reputation for operational excellence and customer service” reflects the values the university seeks to embody on and off the court.

Jon Clay and Drew Johnson, co-founders of Axel Logistics, emphasized that the deal mirrors the athletics department’s focus on talent development and excellence, stating that “our partnership with Tennessee Athletics aligns perfectly with our commitment to fostering growth and giving back to the community that helped us succeed.”

The new branding will make its debut on October 15, when the men’s basketball team sports the Axel patch in an exhibition against Xavier at the Food City Center, and again on October 27, when the Lady Vols wear the logo in their matchup with Florida A&M.

Head coaches Rick Barnes and Kim Caldwell highlighted the significance of a locally rooted company sponsoring the program, pointing to the shared alumni network and the message it sends about supporting homegrown talent.

The patches themselves will display Axel Logistics’ distinctive logo, a visual reminder of the company’s dedication to community engagement, logistical innovation and the university’s enduring spirit.
