A New Chapter for Burrell Athletics
The Burrell athletic department is currently scouting for new leadership in both its wrestling and baseball programs after longtime mentors Steve Ansani and Jay Miller announced their departures.
Ansani, who steered the wrestling squad to a 19th WPIAL Class 2A championship in his inaugural season, is stepping away to devote more time to his family after more than three decades in coaching. His tenure also included guiding the team to multiple championship victories that cemented the program’s recent dominance.
Miller, who led the baseball team to a string of playoff appearances and amassed 13 wins in his first season, is relocating for family reasons and a new position as a health and physical education teacher. His squads were known for competitive games that often came down to the wire, leaving a lasting imprint on the program.
Athletic director Brian Ferra has said the search will be handled with patience, emphasizing the need to identify candidates who can build on the foundations laid by Ansani and Miller while bringing fresh perspectives to the role.
The transitions come at a moment when Burrell athletics enjoys heightened visibility across the region, with recent successes in both wrestling and baseball drawing community support and student interest. As the department moves forward, the hope is that new coaches will continue the tradition of excellence and foster the next generation of athletes, including standouts such as Josh Shields, Mark Spohn, Cam Baker, Brayden Mell, Adam Scheftic, Colton Whitlock, Trey Coury and Rayden Shirey.
