Catamounts' Defense and Offense Impress in Opening Scrimmage
Western Carolina University’s Catamount football team took the field on August 8, 2026, at E.J. Whitmire Stadium for its first preseason scrimmage, running 19 drives that translated into roughly 100 plays over a two‑hour session.
The offense moved the ball efficiently, converting eight of those drives into scores, including six touchdowns — four through the air and two on the ground — and adding a pair of field goals from 32 and 46 yards. The balanced attack was anchored by a committee of six quarterbacks who split reps, with Lex Thomas delivering seven passes for 102 yards and a score, while Isaac Lee posted seven passes for 81 yards and a touchdown.
Ian Grissom also saw action, completing three of four passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns to wideouts Corey Swint and Jemarious Reaves, and Caleb Tucker connected with Mouhamadou Mane for a 16‑yard score. Running back Josh Perry contributed three catches for 31 yards, and Matthew Keener added three receptions for 44 yards, illustrating the depth of the receiving corps.
Defensively, the unit was equally impressive, forcing 11 successful stops and generating three interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown by Hank Bodine, who finished with seven tackles and a pick‑six. Additional playmakers such as Marco Patierno and Na’koma Simpson‑Nealy contributed key sacks and pass breakups, while the secondary’s aggressive style produced multiple takeaways.
Special teams saw Bryan McCollum and Mark Fitzgerald handle extra‑point duties, and kicker Bryan nailed a 32‑yard field goal, underscoring the team’s attention to detail in all three phases.
Head coach Kerwin Bell praised the collective effort but warned that execution must improve before the next scrimmage on August 15 and the season opener against Eastern Kentucky on August 29. The team will also debut its new all‑black Nike ‘Night Cat’ uniform for the opening game, a visual cue of the program’s renewed identity.
