Defensive Backs Lead the Charge
The 2025 high school football season in northern Indiana was defined by relentless defense, with teams posting some of the lowest points‑per‑game averages in recent memory. At the heart of these units were elite defensive backs whose statistics reflected both volume and impact, turning routine drives into scoring opportunities for their offenses.
James Criniti of Saint Joseph emerged as the statistical leader among his peers, tallying 108 tackles and eight interceptions while anchoring a defense that yielded just 9.9 points per game. His ability to read quarterbacks and deliver hard‑hitting plays set the tone for a unit that helped the Huskies capture Class 4A sectional and regional titles.
Amir Dean from Mishawaka earned All‑Northern Lakes Conference honors, contributing to a 10‑2 record that secured the Cavemen the conference championship. Meanwhile, Konnor Amor of LaVille combined 78 tackles with three interceptions and three fumble recoveries, fueling an 8‑5 season that culminated in a Class 1A sectional crown.
Conference Triumphs and Sectional Glory
The defensive excellence extended beyond individual stats. Parker Mrozinski of Mishawaka Marian, named to the All‑Northern Indiana Conference, recorded 79 tackles in 2024 and continued to be a cornerstone for his team’s 2025 campaign. Ethan Horner from Penn, who logged 11 tackles and two interceptions in 2025, is expected to assume an even larger role as the Kings prepare for another NIC title run and a Class 6A sectional championship.
Other notable contributors included Ariah Cross of Saint Joseph, who added 14 tackles and an interception to a 12‑2 record, and Madden Martin, also from Saint Joseph, who posted 29 tackles and two fumble recoveries under Coach Ben Downey. Cole Bell of Elkhart earned All‑Northern Indiana Conference recognition with 68 tackles and two interceptions, while Hayden Gorball of Northridge and Brady Blackford of NorthWood each garnered All‑NLC honors with solid statistical lines.
The defensive prowess of these players helped shape a competitive landscape across the region, with schools such as South Bend Adams, Northridge, and LaVille all posting memorable seasons. As the 2026 campaign approaches, coaches and players alike are leveraging these experiences to target even greater achievements, aiming to build on the foundations laid during a season that highlighted the state’s depth at the defensive back position.
