A caisson permit has been granted for a new DePaul University basketball practice facility slated for the northwest corner of W. Belden Avenue and N. Sheffield Avenue in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood.
A design that blends heritage with modernity
The seven‑story structure will rise 72 feet above the site, replacing four 1890s row houses and a 1925 courtyard building that have stood on the parcel for more than a century.
Designed by HNTB in collaboration with Antunovich Associates, the building will feature a refined brick façade punctuated by floor‑to‑ceiling glass that offers passersby a glimpse of the activity within.
Sustainable features and community benefits
The project incorporates bird‑friendly glass and rooftop solar panels, aiming to cut energy consumption by more than 10 percent. A reduced building footprint will widen the adjacent sidewalk, allowing for new landscaping, benches and a more inviting streetscape.
Inside, the ground floor will house locker rooms, sports‑medicine facilities and other resources for all of DePaul’s athletic departments, while the second floor will be devoted to basketball operations, including coaches’ offices, team lounges and a mezzanine gathering space.
Construction outlook
General contractor Bulley & Andrews is prepared to begin work as soon as demolition permits are issued, paving the way for a facility that will support both the men’s and women’s programs with dedicated practice courts — one for each gender — on the building’s upper level.
