A New Chapter for USD Baseball
Drake Frize, a former San Diego Toreros pitcher, has been appointed to the University of San Diego’s baseball coaching staff as Pitching Analytics Coordinator, bringing a blend of on‑field experience and data‑driven insight to the program.
Frize’s collegiate career spanned five seasons, during which he helped the Toreros capture two West Coast Conference titles in 2024 and contributed to four conference championships overall. After being selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 17th round of the 2024 MLB Draft, he elected to remain in school to recover from Tommy John surgery, missing the 2025 campaign before making a comeback in February 2026.
In his first season back, he logged 52.2 innings with a 5.98 earned‑run average and 42 strikeouts, marking career highs in the latter category. On May 15, 2026, he delivered a six‑inning, one‑run outing that powered a 7‑3 victory over Loyola Marymount, a performance that underscored his readiness to lead the staff’s analytics efforts.
From Draft Pick to Academic Graduate
Beyond the mound, Frize graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Real Estate and Business Administration and earned master’s certificates in Coaching Leadership and Data Analytics, positioning him at the intersection of sport science and academic excellence.
