A Summer of Growth on the Court
The Elkins YMCA’s inaugural Girls’ Summer Basketball League brought together six teams and 44 girls from Randolph County and neighboring communities for a season that blended skill development with confidence‑building fun.
Athletes ranging from ages nine to fourteen honed their shooting, passing and teamwork during practices and games, forging new friendships that extended beyond the hardwood.
Fundraising for the Future
To sustain and expand the gymnasium, the YMCA is launching a Free Throw‑A‑Thon fundraiser on Wednesday, August 5, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Participants will collect pledges for each successful free throw out of twenty attempts, with proceeds earmarked for new basketball equipment and much‑needed HVAC upgrades.
Recent improvements to the facility include a resurfaced floor, new wall mats and chairs, exterior balcony windows and upgraded LED lighting, setting the stage for a modernized playing environment.
Community Invitation
The league’s final two nights of games will be held on Thursday, July 30, and the following evening, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., inviting families and friends to cheer on the players and witness the latest upgrades firsthand.
The season will culminate with a pool party on August 6, celebrating the participants’ achievements and reinforcing the camaraderie built throughout the summer.
Program Director Nic Casey expressed gratitude to the volunteer coaches, basketball committee, sponsors, staff and parents, encouraging continued community involvement.
