European football bodies rally against FIFA’s World Cup stake sale

UEFA, backed by Asian and North American confederations, condemns the proposal as opaque, while FIFA adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigns in protest

Football Supporters Europe (FSE) has come out firmly against FIFA’s proposal to sell a stake in the World Cup, demanding sweeping reforms and greater transparency in the organization’s decision‑making.

A unified European front

All 55 UEFA member nations have voted to boycott the World Cup and any other FIFA‑organized competitions, a stance that has been mirrored by the Asian and North American confederations, signaling broad-based solidarity.

The protest was underscored by the resignation of FIFA’s senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro, who stepped down in direct opposition to the plan.

Calls for reform

Stuart Dykes, FSE’s director of European and Institutional Affairs, criticized the lack of openness surrounding the proposal, arguing that football’s true value is created by fans, players and other stakeholders, not by private investors seeking to extract profit.

Dykes warned that decisions that shape the sport cannot be decided behind closed doors by parties without a direct stake in the game, emphasizing that the entire football community stands behind UEFA’s united front.
