Tim Garl, who spent nearly half a century guiding the Indiana Hoosiers’ men’s basketball program as its head trainer, was forced out of his position in March 2025 at the age of 68.
Allegations of Age Bias
The termination has now become the centerpiece of a lawsuit filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, where Garl accuses the university and its vice president of athletics, Scott Dolson, of age‑based discrimination.
According to the complaint, Dolson told university officials that the decision was driven by a desire for a ‘fresh start’ for the basketball program, a rationale that Garl argues masks a preference for younger, less experienced staff.
Garl’s legal team contends that the university’s actions violate the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, seeking compensatory damages, reinstatement, and a court order prohibiting future biased hiring practices.
The case also highlights a broader trend in collegiate athletics, where veteran support staff are increasingly replaced in favor of newer, tech‑savvy candidates, raising concerns about the value placed on institutional knowledge.
While Indiana University has not publicly commented on the litigation, the lawsuit has sparked discussion among sports administrators and labor advocates about the need for clearer protections for older employees in high‑profile programs.
Tim Garl’s career, marked by four decades of player development and injury prevention, is viewed by many as a cornerstone of the program’s stability, making his abrupt dismissal all the more contentious.
