Southern Connecticut State University is grieving the loss of Louis DiRienzo, Jr., a former Owls football captain who died on June 27, 2026, at the age of 34. At the time of his passing he was the linebackers coach at Monmouth University and was slated to assume the role of defensive coordinator for the upcoming season. He is survived by his wife, Allie DiRienzo, and their twin daughters, Audrina and Giavanna.
A Star on the Field
DiRienzo first arrived on campus as a redshirt freshman in 2010 and went on to start every game from 2011 through 2015, earning the honor of team captain in his final year. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in exercise science in 2016, a foundation that would later inform his approach to player development and physical preparation.
Building a Coaching Career
After completing a master's degree in physical education at Springfield College in 2018, DiRienzo embarked on a coaching journey that took him to Springfield, where he spent five seasons and helped the team capture four consecutive NEWMAC Championships, serving as defensive coordinator for the last four. His expertise then led him to Rutgers in 2019 and Wagner in 2018, before returning to Monmouth, where he was named Co‑Assistant Coach of the Year by the Gridiron Club of New England in 2023.
Colleagues and players alike recall his meticulous attention to technique and his ability to inspire confidence in every unit he coached. The outpouring of tributes from former teammates, administrators, and rival programs underscores the respect he commanded across the collegiate football landscape.
A Family Man and Final Tributes
Beyond the locker room, DiRienzo was a devoted husband and father. His wife, Allie, and their daughters, Audrina and Giavanna, were the center of his personal world. Visitation will be held on July 2 at Westchester Funeral Home in Eastchester, New York, followed by a service on July 3 at Assumption Church in Tuckahoe, also in New York, where friends and family will gather to celebrate his life.
