Houston Mayor John Whitmire announced a new program that will hand out free tickets to 10,000 first‑time attendees for Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash matches, a move designed to preserve the city’s growing soccer enthusiasm in the lead‑up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
A Community‑Driven Ticket Giveaway
The initiative draws inspiration from recent efforts by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who secured 1,000 World Cup tickets for New Yorkers at a reduced price, and Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, who spent over $41,000 on discounted tickets and distributed them to local youth. Both officials praised the model as a way to broaden access to live soccer.
Eligible games include six Dynamo fixtures and six Dash contests, running from July 25 through September 26. Fans can claim up to two complimentary tickets online by using the promo code HOUSTON26, a limit intended to stretch the program’s reach across the community.
Distribution will be coordinated through community organizations, nonprofit partners and youth programs, ensuring that tickets land with residents who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend a professional match.
The Dynamo’s opening eligible match pits the team against Austin FC on Saturday, while the Dash’s first qualifying game is scheduled for August 1 against Bay FC. Both clubs are working closely with Mayor Whitmire’s office to manage the rollout and promote the offer.
FIFA’s involvement adds a global dimension: New York’s $50 ticket deal was negotiated directly with the federation, highlighting how municipal leaders can leverage international events to benefit local constituents. Houston’s program, while smaller in scale, follows the same spirit of using major tournaments to foster home‑grown interest.
