The Iranian national football team landed at Los Angeles International Airport on Monday after a brief stop in Tijuana, Mexico, where they refueled before heading to their World Cup base.
Their opening match is scheduled for Monday at Los Angeles Stadium, a venue that has become a focal point for demonstrations, with protesters brandishing signs demanding democracy in Iran and recalling the fate of athletes detained back home.
A Historic Matchup
The encounter marks a first in World Cup history: a host nation, the United States, is set to face a country with which it is in a state of war, adding a layer of geopolitical tension to the sporting contest.
Earlier this month Iran shifted its training camp from Arizona to Mexico following joint U.S.–Israeli strikes, a move that underscores the broader strain between Tehran and Washington.
Mojgan Ramezani, an Iranian‑American activist, voiced outrage over the January crackdown on protests in Iran, saying the team’s presence in Los Angeles cannot be separated from the ongoing struggle for freedom back home.
