Jayson Wells Appointed Director of Mindset & Culture for University of Washington Athletics

Former pro player and consultant brings extensive mental‑performance and leadership experience to the Huskies

Jayson Wells has been named the Director of Mindset & Culture for the University of Washington Athletics staff, a role that places him under head coach Danny Sprinkle and signals a new focus on mental preparation and team culture for the Huskies.

A New Era for Huskies Basketball

Wells brings a 13‑year professional playing career that spanned leagues in Finland, Ukraine, Israel and beyond, during which he captured championships and earned All‑Pro honors, including a top rebounding finish in the Israeli Basketball Premier League in the 2003‑04 season.

Before joining the Huskies, he served as an assistant coach at Cal State Fullerton under Dedrique Taylor and later as a skills development coach for the Titans, experiences that deepened his understanding of player growth and program building.

His consulting tenure with Chapman & Co. Leadership Institute from 2017 to 2024 saw him work with high‑profile clients such as American Airlines and US Bank, a period that culminated in the firm’s Client Impact Award for his contributions.

Wells also directed Nike Grassroots Basketball’s Elite 100 program from 2015 to 2017 and ran skill‑development camps that have attracted NBA stars including Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Anthony Davis, underscoring his reputation as a top trainer.

Beyond the court, he founded Jayson’s Playground and the Shoes Have Souls Podcast, platforms dedicated to motivational speaking and skill development since his retirement from professional basketball in 2010.

A graduate of Indiana State University, where he led in scoring and rebounding during his senior year, Wells also guided Cleveland Central Catholic High School to back‑to‑back North Coast League titles, adding a layer of community leadership to his résumé.

With his blend of international playing experience, coaching acumen, consulting success and entrepreneurial drive, Wells is expected to infuse the Washington program with a competitive edge and a resilient mindset as the team looks ahead.
