A Rare Feat Returns to the Brickyard
Katherine Legge, a seasoned sports car driver with a background in IndyCar and endurance racing, will attempt the Memorial Day Double by entering both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on May 27. Her participation is secured after late commitments from multiple teams, ensuring she will be on the grid for both of the sport’s most prestigious events.
The 2026 edition of the Coca-Cola 600 will feature only 39 entries, the smallest field since the 2022‑2023 seasons, underscoring the rarity of the undertaking. Legge’s No. 78 Chevrolet, entered by NY Racing Team, is one of four confirmed cars for the night race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The team’s decision to retain her entry locked her into the lineup, while other potential additions were withdrawn.
Legge will qualify for the Coca-Cola 600 on Saturday, May 25, and then shift focus to the Indy 500 on Sunday, May 26. Historically, only five drivers have completed the double in a single day, and Kyle Larson remains the most recent to achieve it in 2025. If successful, Legge would become the sixth name on that exclusive list.
The schedule will see Legge navigate a packed weekend that also includes other drivers swapping rides. Austin Hill, for example, is slated to take over Kyle Busch’s No. 8 entry, while Brexton Busch, Kyle’s son, is expected to make his own debut in a different program. These lineup changes reflect the fluid nature of the sport’s late‑season roster decisions.
Beyond the on‑track action, the double duty appearance highlights the growing intersection of IndyCar, NASCAR, and sports car ecosystems. Teams such as Live Fast Motorsports, Richard Childress Racing, MBM Motorsports, 23XI Racing, and others have all confirmed entries or support roles, illustrating a collaborative environment that benefits drivers like Legge who straddle multiple series.
