A New Chapter for Magnussen
Kevin Magnussen, a former Formula 1 driver and endurance racing competitor, is set to make his NASCAR Cup Series debut at the inaugural San Diego weekend on June 21.
He will pilot the No. 91 Qualcomm Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing, a ride arranged through the team’s PROJECT91 initiative, which seeks to bring international talent into the American stock car circuit.
Magnussen’s racing résumé includes a debut in Formula 1 in 2014, a stint that yielded 202 championship points, and recent campaigns in the FIA World Endurance Championship’s GTP class with BMW M Team WRT.
The upcoming race will mark the sixth appearance of PROJECT91, following successful débuts by drivers such as Shane van Gisbergen, who captured victory in his own debut at the 2023 Chicago Street Race.
Speaking about the opportunity, Magnussen said he is excited to compete in NASCAR and praised the preparation work of the team, highlighting the professionalism of his new crew chief, Phil Surgen.
Project91’s Expanding Reach
Trackhouse Racing’s partnership with sponsors like Qualcomm reflects a broader strategy to blend technological innovation with competitive racing, while the involvement of BMW’s endurance program adds a cross‑disciplinary dimension.
The San Diego event will not only showcase Magnussen’s transition but also underscore NASCAR’s growing emphasis on global talent, a trend exemplified by the participation of drivers from Australia, New Zealand and Denmark.
