A New Chapter for International Drivers in NASCAR
Kevin Magnussen, a former Formula 1 driver who first entered grand prix racing in 2014 with McLaren, is preparing to make his NASCAR Cup Series debut at the upcoming event in San Diego.
The Danish driver will climb into the No. 91 Qualcomm Chevrolet fielded by Trackhouse Racing’s PROJECT91 program, a venture that seeks to showcase top talent from outside NASCAR on the American stock car stage.
Magnussen expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity, noting that PROJECT91 offers a rare platform for drivers from other motorsport disciplines to test themselves in a stock car environment, while also highlighting the excitement of competing on a street circuit in San Diego.
The program, which has previously attracted champions such as Kimi Raikkonen and four‑time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves, continues to draw global stars eager to experience NASCAR’s unique challenges.
Trackhouse Racing will field four cars for the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race at Naval Base Coronado, scheduled for June 21, with Phil Surgen assigned as Magnussen’s crew chief and Qualcomm supplying AI‑driven insights to aid real‑time decision making.
The event, branded as the Anduril 250, will be streamed across multiple platforms including Prime Video, Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM, underscoring the series’ effort to blend traditional racing heritage with modern technology.
