Danish Formula 1 veteran Kevin Magnussen is set to make his NASCAR Cup Series debut at the inaugural street‑course event in San Diego, California, slated for next year on the temporary circuit that winds through Naval Base Coronado.
Magnussen, who has logged 185 Grand Prix starts between 2014 and 2024, earned a podium on his Formula 1 debut and claimed a pole position at the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix, will step into the No. 91 Chevrolet as part of Trackhouse Racing’s Project 91 program.
The Project 91 initiative, launched to bridge top‑level motorsport talent with the American stock car scene, has already showcased drivers such as Shane van Gisbergen, Kimi Raikkonen and Helio Castroneves, setting a precedent for international stars seeking new challenges.
Qualcomm Technologies will sponsor the No. 91 entry, adding technological weight to the program, while veteran crew chief Phil Surgen, who guided Ross Chastain to six Cup victories and a runner‑up finish in the 2022 championship, will oversee Magnussen’s rookie campaign.
The move also carries a family legacy, as Magnussen’s father Jan Magnussen previously contested a NASCAR Cup race at Sonoma in 2010, finishing 12th in his sole start.
A New Chapter for Trackhouse Racing
Trackhouse Racing, co‑founded by former driver Justin Marks, sees in Magnussen a blend of technical acumen and endurance‑racing experience that could accelerate its growth on and off the track. The team’s ambition aligns with the broader push to diversify its driver lineup with global talent.
