Mexico’s ‘Wave Yes, Chant No’ Campaign Tackles Homophobic Echoes Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Former stars Hugo Sánchez, Manuel Negrete and Javier Aguirre lead a two‑stage drive to replace hateful chants with a unifying fan wave.

The Mexican Football Federation has launched a campaign to silence a homophobic chant that has haunted Mexican stadiums for two decades, aiming to replace it with a unifying fan movement.

The offending chant, which erupts whenever the opposing goalkeeper prepares a goal kick, has drawn a dozen FIFA sanctions and sharp criticism from LGBT+ advocacy groups, resurfacing strongly in recent weeks.

A wave of change

Named ‘The Wave Yes, The Chant No’, the initiative enlists three former Mexican internationals — Hugo Sánchez, Manuel Negrete and Javier Aguirre — who starred in the 1986 World Cup and now front a two‑stage effort that blends social‑media outreach with in‑stadium displays.

Central to the campaign is the Mexican Wave, a coordinated sea of standing fans that first surged across the stands of Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca in 1986, symbolizing collective support rather than hostility.

Mexico will co‑host the 2026 World Cup with the United States and Canada, opening the tournament on June 11 against South Africa, and the campaign will run through a series of friendly matches before the global showcase.

FIFA has already penalised Mexico for the chant’s recurrence, and the nation is currently appealing those sanctions before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, hoping the new campaign will avert further punishment.

The rollout will unfold in two phases, beginning with a digital push on platforms popular in the United States, Brazil, Russia, Qatar and beyond, followed by live demonstrations during three pre‑tournament friendlies, where the wave will be choreographed to echo through the stands.

If successful, the campaign could set a precedent for how host nations address discriminatory fan behaviour, turning a long‑standing embarrassment into a showcase of solidarity.
