Historic Significance of North Wilkesboro
The return of the sport to North Wilkesboro follows a multi‑year revival effort. In 2019, Dale Earnhardt Jr. spearheaded a community push that culminated in an $18 million investment, partially funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, to modernize the track’s infrastructure and improve safety features.
Originally opened in 1947 as a red‑dirt oval, the venue has a storied legacy. Hall of Famers Richard Petty and Darrell Waltrip top the all‑time win list with 15 and 10 victories respectively, setting a benchmark for the upcoming race.
