Drivers must monitor velocity using a tachometer, gear‑indicator lights and a wealth of pre‑calculated data supplied by their crew. This arrangement forces them to interpret engine revolutions and gear ratios rather than glance at a direct speed readout.
Before the 2016 season, teams handled pit‑road speed management manually. Engineers would determine the optimal combination of gear and engine rpm for each pit stop and relay those numbers to the driver, who then executed the shift at the precise moment.
Since 2016, NASCAR has mandated McLaren‑built digital dashboards that feature either light‑based or numerical tachometer displays specifically for pit‑speed reference. These systems compute permissible speeds down to 0.01 mph by factoring engine rpm, gear ratio and wheel size.
The series divides pit road into segmented zones and tracks a car’s average speed with transponders and embedded timing loops. Rather than enforcing an instantaneous limit, NASCAR applies a 5‑mph buffer, allowing a brief exceedance before a penalty is issued — a tolerance not used in Formula 1.
The impetus for this technology came from a 1990 tragedy at the Atlanta Journal 500, when Ricky Rudd’s crash into pit‑road personnel killed tire‑changer Mike Rich. The incident prompted NASCAR to institute pit‑road speed limits the following year, eventually evolving into the sophisticated monitoring system used today. Drivers now favor light‑based dashboards because they demand less visual attention than numeric readouts.
