NCAA approves multiple logos on Division I hockey gear
The NCAA announced that starting with the 2026‑27 season, Division I hockey teams may display up to two commercial logos on their jerseys and one on their helmets or other equipment. The change, which applies only during the preseason and regular season, is intended to give programs greater flexibility in monetising their visual identity.
University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) is actively evaluating how the new allowance could be leveraged for both its men’s and women’s programs. Athletic director Forrest Karr said the university sees value in aligning with recognized brands that have a presence in the local community.
Several programs have already moved ahead of the rule. Air Force, Army and Michigan State are among the schools that have secured sponsorship agreements that will see their emblems featured on uniforms for the upcoming season.
Strategic hires and conference moves
The proposal to expand logo placement originated from the Division I men’s ice hockey oversight committee, which cited feedback from coaches and administrators seeking more realistic commercial opportunities.
Among the student‑athletes highlighted in the announcement, Max Plante, a communications major at UMD, maintains a 3.56 GPA and has earned multiple academic accolades, underscoring the program’s emphasis on scholarship.
Caleb Johnson, recently hired as the director of hockey operations for UMD’s men’s team, will oversee the implementation of new branding strategies and manage the integration of sponsor assets into the roster’s visual presentation.
Conference dynamics and upcoming events
NCHC commissioner Heather Weems, who recently signed a four‑year contract extension, will guide the conference as it welcomes Arizona State and St. Thomas, further shaping the landscape in which UMD will operate.
The schedule also features notable events: the WCHA Final Faceoff will return to St. Thomas and St. Paul in 2027, while Amsoil Arena in Duluth is slated to host the NCAA Women’s Frozen Four from March 19‑21.
Recruiting news includes forward Taylor Hall’s commitment to UMD for the 2028‑29 season and four incoming freshmen attending USA Hockey’s girls national U19 training camp. Additionally, the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) and Minnesota Frost are running community camps in the Twin Ports region.
