Norway's soccer federation has formally demanded that Gianni Infantino step down from his position as president of FIFA, arguing that his proposal to monetize World Cup revenues has eroded confidence in the sport's governing body.
Lise Klaveness, the federation's president, said the growing distrust is rooted in what she described as worsening conditions for football stakeholders each year, and she warned that the current leadership cannot continue to ignore the concerns of member associations.
The backlash has rippled beyond Norway's borders. UEFA issued a stark warning that it would consider boycotting FIFA competitions unless Infantino abandoned his controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise plan and publicly apologized for the misstep.
In response, the English Football Association announced in March that it would no longer back Infantino's bid for re‑election, joining a growing list of European federations that have voiced opposition.
Mexico's soccer federation, however, threw its weight behind Infantino during the crisis, praising his efforts to expand the sport's global reach and expressing confidence in his vision for the game.
A Fracturing Alliance
Norway's federation has now filed a fresh complaint with FIFA's ethics committee, targeting the Forward Enterprise initiative, the award of a so‑called Trump peace prize, and the recent suspension of Arsenal forward Folarin Balogun's ban.
The tension came to a head at a summit in Rabat, Morocco, where Infantino initially appeared to secure the backing of key FIFA officials. Yet the combined pressure from UEFA and Norway's federation quickly undermined that fragile consensus.
