Penn State’s Lift for Life Raises $40,000 for Rare‑Disease Families, Cementing a 23‑Year Tradition

Players, coaches, and a new Adidas partnership unite around a cause that has generated over $80 million for families across the nation.

The 23rd Annual Lift for Life event at Penn State brought together players and coaches in a fundraiser that generated more than $40,000 for Uplifting Athletes, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting families affected by rare diseases.

A Legacy of Service and Brotherhood

Since its inception in 2003 by former Nittany Lion Scott Shirley, Uplifting Athletes has grown into a national force, having raised over $80 million for rare‑disease families. The organization’s reach extends far beyond State College, with more than 90 Uplifting Experiences delivered last year alone.

This year’s competition featured a sled race, a medicine‑ball throw and an exercise‑bike sprint, each designed to test strength while driving donations. Dominic Rulli, an offensive lineman, spoke about the personal significance of the cause, noting that every dollar raised carries a story of hope for a family battling a rare condition.

Brett Brackett, president of Uplifting Athletes, credited the late coaching legend Joe Paterno for instilling a spirit of service that continues to guide the group. “Joe’s legacy is about using the platform we have to lift others,” Brackett said, recalling how the coach’s example inspired the nonprofit’s expansion.

The current roster of Nittany Lions has quickly forged a tight‑knit brotherhood. Defensive lineman Armstrong Nnodim highlighted that the team’s focus extends beyond the gridiron, emphasizing life lessons and mutual support that define their culture.

A notable shift off the field involves the program’s apparel partner. After 33 years with Nike, Penn State has transitioned to Adidas, debuting new gear at a campus pop‑up sale. The change marks the first apparel partnership change since the early 1990s, though the jerseys retain familiar designs with only an Adidas patch added.
