Spanish Fort’s football program, known as the Toros, is gearing up for a season that could end a rare postseason drought that stretched into 2025. After a year without playoff action, the team is determined to reclaim its spot among the contenders.
A Young Core With Big Ambitions
Head coach Chase Smith, now in his third year, has assembled a roster that features only five seniors but is rich in underclass talent. Smith’s philosophy centers on building chemistry early and giving younger players the chance to develop under pressure.
At the heart of the offense, senior quarterback Jaylyn “JJ” Thibodeaux will assume the starting role, stepping into the shoes of Aaden Shamburger. Thibodeaux is widely praised as a great teammate and natural leader, qualities that should help steady a unit eager to prove itself.
The defensive side of the ball returns experienced playmakers such as Sam Wilder, Brandon Marino and Tom Coker. Their presence provides a solid foundation, while a group of younger defensive backs are battling for starting positions, adding depth and competition to the lineup.
The schedule opens with a home game against Daphne on August 20, 2026, giving the Toros an early opportunity to set the tone. Shortly thereafter, in Week 3, the team will travel to Elberta to begin Class 5A Region play, a test that will quickly reveal how far the young squad has progressed.
