Soccer’s Surge in the United States
The buzz around soccer in the United States isn’t just coming from stadium lights and chants; it’s also spilling over from living rooms where viewers have fallen in love with a different kind of coach.
Brendan Hunt, who co‑created the Apple TV+ series alongside Jason Sudeikis, says the show’s humor has unintentionally opened a gateway for many Americans who previously dismissed the sport.
The series, which has already earned 13 Emmy Awards — including two for best comedy series — has turned its titular character into a cultural touchstone, encouraging fans to embrace the nuances of the beautiful game.
Hunt points out that soccer’s growth in the U.S. actually began long before the show premiered, noting that Major League Soccer was founded just two years after the 1994 World Cup, a tournament that first sparked interest on home soil.
With the United States, Mexico and Canada set to co‑host the 2026 World Cup, the creators believe American supporters are now more prepared than ever, having followed the sport’s gradual rise and the increasing visibility of international matches.
Sudeikis adds that the upcoming fourth season, slated to debut on Apple TV in August 2025, will continue to blend comedy with moments that celebrate soccer’s community spirit, reinforcing the sport’s expanding footprint.
