The upcoming documentary “Basketball State: The Story of Terrence Brown” is set to premiere at the 2026 Summer League Film Festival in Las Vegas, offering an intimate portrait of a player who transformed from an overlooked high school prospect into a highly sought‑after college guard.
Directed by Gabe Hostetler, a childhood friend of Brown, the film began as an ambitious effort to capture the breadth of Minnesota’s basketball culture before narrowing its lens to Brown’s relentless pursuit of a Division I scholarship after leaving Columbia Heights High without any offers.
From Suburbs to the Tar Heels
Brown grew up in the Minneapolis suburbs and starred at Columbia Heights High, where he posted a standout senior season despite the lack of Division I interest. His determination earned him a spot at the University of North Carolina, where he now wears the Tar Heels jersey and continues to attract attention from the college basketball community.
The documentary weaves together behind‑the‑scenes footage from every stop of Brown’s journey, interlacing personal reflections with the broader narrative of a region known for its basketball pedigree.
Premiere and Conversation
The festival screening will showcase a 20‑minute condensed version of the feature‑length film, followed by a live Q&A where Brown and Hostetler will discuss the making of the documentary. Hostetler has announced plans to continue documenting Brown’s first season at Chapel Hill, promising a new chapter that will further enrich the story of perseverance and ambition.
