In the summer of 1930, a modest tournament in Uruguay set the stage for what would become the world’s most watched sporting event. Among the teams competing was the United States, a side that would soon etch its name into the competition’s early lore.
Bert Patenaude, a forward for that U.S. squad, found the net three times in a single match, a feat that would later be recognized as the first hat trick in World Cup history. At the time, however, the achievement was overlooked, and the credit was given to others.
The Forgotten Hat Trick
Decades passed before soccer historian Colin Jose began piecing together newspaper reports, match sheets and personal testimonies that painted a clearer picture of what had transpired on that June day.
Research That Rewrote History
Jose’s meticulous work, which included interviews with surviving players and a review of contemporary score sheets, convinced him that Patenaude’s three goals were indeed recorded correctly. His findings were published in a series of articles that sparked renewed interest among statisticians and fans alike.
The culmination of this work arrived in 2006, when FIFA officially amended its historical records to credit Patenaude with the hat trick, erasing the earlier misattribution after 76 years.
That same year, Patenaude’s contribution was further cemented when he was inducted into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame, a honor that placed him among the nation’s earliest football legends.
A Legacy of Recognition
In addition to the Hall of Fame induction, the soccer community created the Colin Jose Media Award, presented annually to honor journalists who, like Jose, champion accurate storytelling and the preservation of the sport’s heritage.
The story of Patenaude’s hat trick now stands as a reminder that even the most historic moments can fade from memory, only to be revived by dedicated research and a commitment to factual integrity.
