Trackhouse Racing has named Kevin Magnussen as the driver for its Project 91 entry for the upcoming NASCAR Cup Series event at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego. The announcement marks the latest chapter in a program that has already showcased international talent and leverages the support of San Diego‑based Qualcomm Technologies.
A new chapter for Project 91
Magnussen arrives with a résumé that spans a debut Formula 1 season in 2014 with McLaren, a pole position at the 2022 São Paulo Grand Prix, and recent campaigns in the FIA World Endurance Championship’s Hyperclass and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s GTP class. He also contested a one‑off NTT IndyCar start at Road America in 2023, giving him a diverse single‑seater background that Trackhouse believes will translate well to the stock‑car format.
The San Diego race will be backed by Qualcomm Technologies, a partnership that underscores the project’s blend of cutting‑edge technology and motorsport ambition. Project 91 previously brought Kimi Raikkönen to the United States in 2023, featured Helio Castroneves in the 2025 Daytona 500, and served as the launchpad for Shane van Gisbergen’s NASCAR career, a trajectory that the team hopes to repeat with Magnussen.
Phil Surgen, a veteran crew chief, will guide Magnussen’s setup and race strategy, while the driver will share the lineup with full‑time Cup drivers Ross Chastain, Connor Zilisch and Shane van Gisbergen. The 75‑lap event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. ET, with live coverage streaming on Amazon Prime for viewers across the United States.
Looking ahead
Magnussen expressed excitement about the opportunity, noting that the chance to race a Chevrolet for Trackhouse represents a fresh challenge after years in Formula 1 and endurance racing. He joins a roster that includes former F1 colleagues turned rivals, and his participation adds another layer of international intrigue to a series that continues to expand its global footprint.
