Tracy McGrady, a 15‑time NBA All‑Star and Hall of Famer, has stepped onto a new stage in college basketball. After forgoing higher education to enter the professional ranks straight out of high school, the Texas native is now leveraging his extensive playing and business experience to shape the future of Wagner College’s men’s program.
A Strategic Advisor with a Vision
In his new capacity, McGrady will oversee basketball operations, drive recruiting efforts and spearhead name, image and likeness (NIL) initiatives. His appointment comes as the program seeks to rebuild its competitive edge and return to the NCAA Tournament, a goal that has eluded the school in recent years.
The timing of McGrady’s hiring is closely tied to his personal involvement with his son, Laymen McGrady, who is in the process of transferring from Oral Roberts. While assisting his son’s move, McGrady recognized an opportunity to blend family priorities with a broader mission for Wagner’s basketball future.
Chasing a Tournament Return
McGrady expressed enthusiasm about the challenge, emphasizing that his ultimate aim is to help Wagner reclaim a place among the nation’s top college programs. He believes his unique perspective — spanning professional success and grassroots basketball — can accelerate the team’s development and foster a culture of excellence.
