UEFA Calls for Boycott of FIFA Amid Controversial World Cup Investment Scheme
European football’s governing body announced that all of its member associations have voted unanimously to suspend participation in FIFA‑run competitions, including the World Cup, as a protest against a proposal to monetize the tournament through a multibillion‑dollar subsidiary.
The move follows FIFA’s announcement that it intends to create a $20 billion entity to oversee the World Cup and other global events, offering up to a 20 percent stake to external investors. UEFA has warned that the World Cup cannot be treated as a commercial asset and must remain a sporting legacy built by players, teams and fans worldwide.
Support from English FA and Regional Criticisms
A spokesperson for the English Football Association issued a statement expressing full support for UEFA’s decision, emphasizing that the organization stands alongside its European colleagues in opposition to any private ownership of the sport’s flagship competition.
Both the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF have echoed the criticism, accusing FIFA of moving forward without adequate consultation with regional bodies and urging a reversal of the scheme.
The controversy also casts a shadow over upcoming tournaments, with the Women’s World Cup slated for Brazil in 2025 and FIFA’s inaugural Under‑15 World Cup scheduled to take place in Azerbaijan in October.
