UEFA's Rebuke of FIFA's World Cup Overhaul
European football's governing body has reacted angrily to FIFA's plan to create a company with private investors to run the World Cup, warning that the move threatens the sport's integrity and could set a dangerous precedent for how the tournament is governed and commercialized.
At the heart of the controversy is FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a venture valued at roughly $20 billion that would be led by Thrive Eternal, a firm linked to Jared Kushner, the son‑in‑law of former U.S. President Donald Trump. The proposal promises more than $10 billion in development funding, but UEFA argues that the lack of clear governance structures and the involvement of private capital cross a line that football's institutions have long vowed not to cross.
The Football Association and CONCACAF have echoed UEFA's concerns, emphasizing that the process lacks due diligence and transparency. Both bodies have suggested the possibility of boycotting FIFA competitions if the plan proceeds without adequate safeguards, underscoring a growing rift between world football's continental regulators and the sport's global governing federation.
The 2026 World Cup, scheduled to be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, adds another layer of complexity. The tournament's predominantly U.S. venue mix has already drawn attention, especially after Donald Trump intervened in a U.S. player's suspension during the event, further fueling perceptions of political meddling in the competition.
