The FIFA World Cup is leaving a patchwork imprint on Vancouver’s small‑business landscape, with some merchants enjoying a surge of international shoppers while others face unexpected hurdles.
When Soccer Meets Commerce
At Coast Crafts, a boutique just steps from BC Place, the tournament has turned into a windfall. Owner Kingsley Bailey describes the scene as pandemonium, and his handcrafted fridge magnets have become an unexpected bestseller, drawing tourists from dozens of countries.
FIFA's strict licensing rules have created complications for several entrepreneurs, forcing some to rethink how they market their wares. Dawn Moulton, who produces football‑themed bears, removed all references to the governing body from her products, yet she reports no noticeable dip in sales, suggesting the impact varies widely across the sector.
In contrast, Aquariums West, a long‑standing aquarium shop, has been forced to close its doors for each of the seven World Cup matches. Manager Kreig LeBlanc warns that the loss of access and reduced foot traffic is threatening the business’s viability, and he notes a lack of support to offset the disruption.
