Zee Entertainment Enterprises announced on Tuesday that it has clinched the broadcast and streaming rights for a record 39 FIFA‑sanctioned competitions spanning the years 2026 through 2034. The agreement covers everything from the flagship FIFA World Cup tournaments to age‑group and futsal events, as well as a suite of documentary series tied to each property.
The rollout will begin on June 11, when the opening match of the 2026 World Cup kicks off, and will be delivered across four newly launched sports channels as well as on Zee’s streaming platform ZEE5. This multi‑platform approach is designed to maximise reach and ensure that Indian viewers can follow the action live, regardless of their preferred viewing method.
A New Horizon for Football in India
Punit Goenka, CEO of Zee Entertainment Enterprises, expressed enthusiasm about the deal, stating that bringing FIFA events to Indian audiences represents a watershed moment for the sport’s growth in the country. His counterpart at FIFA, Romy Gai, the chief business officer, highlighted the strategic importance of the Indian market, noting that the nation’s passion for football could rival that of traditional powerhouses.
While the financial details of the agreement have not been disclosed, industry insiders recall that FIFA had initially sought a $100 million price tag for the broadcast rights. The final arrangement underscores the value that both parties place on the Indian market, even as the exact figure remains confidential.
Mukund Galgali, Zee’s deputy CEO and CFO, added that football holds immense untapped potential in India, and that the partnership will help unlock that promise. He pointed to Zee’s existing Unite8 Sports portfolio, which already includes rights to cricket, kabaddi, badminton, wrestling and combat sports, as a foundation upon which the FIFA deal will further diversify Zee’s sports offerings.
The agreement marks a significant shift in a market that has long been dominated by cricket. By securing rights to the FIFA World Cup, the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027, and a host of other tournaments, Zee aims to cement its position as a premier destination for sports content in India and to tap into a growing fan base that is eager for more diverse football coverage.
Looking Ahead
Industry analysts expect the deal to accelerate the development of football infrastructure across the country, from grassroots programmes to professional leagues. As the rights holder for a decade‑spanning slate of events, Zee is positioned to shape how Indian audiences experience the world’s most popular sport, potentially reshaping the commercial landscape of Indian sports broadcasting.
