Zee Launches Unite8 Sports Channels to Capture FIFA World Cup Broadcast Market in India

Four new Hindi and English sports channels aim to secure rights for the 2026 tournament as negotiations with FIFA intensify

A Strategic Expansion

Zee Entertainment Enterprises has rolled out four dedicated sports channels under the Unite8 Sports banner, delivering content in both Hindi and English to cater to India’s diverse fan base.

The lineup includes Unite8 Sports 1 and Unite8 Sports 1 HD in Hindi, alongside Unite8 Sports 2 and Unite8 Sports 2 HD in English, each programmed to showcase a mix of soccer, cricket, kabaddi, badminton, wrestling and combat sports such as boxing.

Bavesh Janavlekar, a seasoned executive, has taken on additional responsibilities as chief business officer of Unite8 Sports, underscoring the company’s focus on monetising live‑event rights.

Negotiations and Market Dynamics

FIFA’s pursuit of broadcast and streaming rights for the 2026 World Cup in India has been marked by a high‑stakes negotiation curve: the governing body initially sought $100 million for a package covering both the 2026 and 2030 tournaments, only to lower its expectation to roughly $60 million. JioStar’s $20 million offer has left the discussion at an impasse, while Sony has opted out of submitting a formal bid.

Despite the stalemate in India, FIFA has already secured agreements with more than 180 territories worldwide, highlighting the global appetite for the sport’s premier event.

The 2026 World Cup is scheduled to begin on June 11 and will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico across 16 cities, setting the stage for a tournament that could reshape viewing habits in the subcontinent.
