Quarterback battle shapes Gators’ outlook
Florida head coach Jon Sumrall finds himself at the center of a quarterback competition as the Gators gear up for their season opener against Florida Atlantic.
Aaron Philio, a transfer from Georgia Tech, brings familiarity with offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner’s scheme, having completed 21 of 28 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns in the spring game, though he also threw two interceptions.
Tramell Jones Jr., the other contender, impressed coaches with his leadership and deep‑throwing ability, finishing 13 of 17 for 210 yards and two scores while being sacked three times.
Sumrall has repeatedly stressed that leadership and consistency will be decisive in naming the starter, and he has yet to set a timeline for the final decision.
Wide receiver Dallas Wilson, who overcame a foot injury, is expected to be fully available, having even traveled to Nike’s headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon, where he was fitted with a specially designed cleat to aid his recovery.
The offensive line is also a focus; the unit has added strength over the summer but must replace three starters, including All‑American center Jake Slaughter, left tackle Austin Barber and right guard Damieon George Jr.
With multiple groupings still being tested, Sumrall remains open to the possibility that the best five will emerge through competition rather than a predetermined rotation.
