Champions from Every Arena Join Forces
Legacy Motor Club unveiled a new ownership consortium on Thursday, bringing together a roster of champions from across sports and business to steer the team into a fresh chapter.
At the heart of the group is Jimmie Johnson, a seven‑time NASCAR Cup Series champion who will retain majority ownership, alongside Darius Rucker, the Grammy‑winning country star, and the flamboyant chef Guy Fieri. The consortium also counts IndyCar stalwarts Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti, tennis standout Bryce Harper, and surfing legend Kelly Slater among its ranks.
The lineup extends to former MLB star Chase Utley, baseball’s Andy Roddick, Tony Kanaan, and a host of investors whose careers span venture capital, hospitality and consumer brands. Jen Rubio, co‑founder of Away, and Sam Byrne, a partner at CrossHarbor Capital, round out the team, which collectively boasts more than 30 championship titles, including five Indianapolis 500 victories.
Johnson described the venture as non‑traditional, emphasizing shared values of competition, leadership and innovation. The partnership with Knighthead Capital Management will see the group jointly manage the team, which currently fields two full‑time Cup Series entries driven by Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek, with Johnson slated to compete in select races.
Toyota will serve as the team’s manufacturer beginning in 2024, with plans to expand to three full‑time entries by 2027. Johnson’s final Cup Series start is scheduled for the 2027 Daytona 500, where he will pilot the iconic No. 48 car, marking the culmination of a storied driving career.
The announcement underscores a cultural shift, blending the grit of motorsport with the influence of entertainment and entrepreneurship, aiming to broaden the sport’s appeal while preserving its competitive spirit.
