The New York Giants have launched a sweeping initiative that brings together school districts, community leaders and corporate partners to build a robust girls flag football ecosystem across the state. By hosting clinics, donating gear and assigning dedicated staff, the franchise is turning a grassroots idea into a statewide movement.
Since flag football was designated a sanctioned varsity sport in New York in 2023, the number of Section 1 teams has quadrupled, reflecting a surge in participation that mirrors national trends. The rapid expansion has created new opportunities for female athletes to compete at the high school level and beyond.
Katie DiChiaro, who founded the first all‑girls youth league in New York in 2018, has been recognized as Coach of the Year by the Giants for her pioneering work, a tribute that underscores the program’s impact on young athletes and highlights the league’s commitment to excellence.
The collaboration includes a supply agreement with Nike and USA Football, which provide uniforms and equipment to participating schools, ensuring that teams can compete with the same resources as traditional programs. This partnership not only elevates the visual profile of the sport but also removes financial barriers for many communities.
The NFL’s long‑standing FLAG program, active since 1996, supplies the strategic framework and national visibility that the Giants leverage, aiming to give millions of children a pathway to play and, ultimately, to represent the United States on the world stage, with flag football slated for the 2028 Olympics.
