Buddy Battle Returns to Syracuse Basketball as Hybrid Coach

Former star aims to rebuild the program’s competitiveness and mentor players beyond the court

Buddy Battle is set to rejoin the Syracuse University basketball program in a newly created hybrid position that blends on‑court skill development with off‑court mentorship, a move aimed at restoring the team’s competitiveness and returning it to the NCAA Tournament.

A Return to the Orange

During his collegiate career from 2016 to 2019, Battle helped the Orange reach the 2019 Sweet 16 and finished 18th on the school’s all‑time scoring list with 1,647 points. He also captured a gold medal with the USA Under‑17 team at the 2014 FIBA World Championship and led the team in free‑throw shooting during his sophomore and junior seasons.

Mentorship Meets Competition

In his new role, Battle will work directly with players in small groups and individually, focusing on both basketball fundamentals and personal growth. He will partner with Ryan Blackwell, who will lead life‑skills development for the squad.

The appointment comes as the program, guided by athletic director John Wildhack and supported by longtime figure Jim Boeheim’s legacy, seeks to rebuild its national profile. Partnerships with corporate allies such as Nike further reinforce the initiative.
