Documenting the City’s Soccer Landscape
Malcolm Buick, the executive creative director and partner at Brooklyn‑based branding agency Athletics, has introduced a digital archive called "&Friends" that maps the diverse soccer culture of New York City.
The project spotlights fourteen local clubs, ranging from established teams such as the Chinatown Soccer Club to informal pick‑up groups that gather in parks across the five boroughs.
Buick, a lifelong player who grew up kicking a ball on the east coast of Scotland, partnered with the adult rec league NYC Footy to amplify the archive’s reach and build a broader roster of participants.
The archive launched on June 10 with a launch party at Honey’s bar in Bushwick, Brooklyn, an event that drew attention from both the local soccer community and larger‑name teams.
Promotion has been driven by NYC Footy and a handful of more prominent clubs, while Buick hopes the collection will catch the eye of New York institutions — including art museums and the mayor’s office — that could help foster the sport’s growth.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani has already signaled support for soccer in the city, offering low‑cost World Cup tickets and organizing watch parties, making the timing of &Friends particularly strategic.
Beyond the city, Buick envisions the archive as a catalyst for expanding soccer’s footprint across North America, encouraging youth participation and fostering a deeper cultural connection to the game.
The initiative underscores how a single creative effort can bridge community sport, institutional advocacy, and digital storytelling, illustrating the evolving ways enthusiasts document and promote grassroots athletics.
