A New Chapter in Michigan Basketball
Mike Martin, a veteran coach with a decade‑plus tenure at Brown University, has agreed to join Mike Boynton’s staff as an assistant coach at the University of Michigan. The hiring marks a homecoming for Martin, who spent 13 seasons shaping the Bears program and came close to guiding them to the NCAA Tournament in 2024.
During his time at Brown, Martin oversaw a period of growth that included a 9‑19 record in Ivy League play over the past two seasons and a narrow loss to Yale in the conference championship game. The Bears’ 2023‑24 campaign was marred by the departure of three of their top five scorers, a challenge that Martin says informed his decision to seek a new environment.
Connecting the Dots
Boynton, who was recently handed a two‑year contract after serving as interim head coach, is assembling a fresh coaching roster. He was spotted recruiting at the Nike EYBL event in Las Vegas, where he and assistant Kyle Church evaluated prospects for the upcoming season. The move signals a shift toward a more aggressive recruiting strategy.
Martin’s roots in the Brown community run deep; he graduated from the university and began his coaching career on Glen Miller’s staff. His familiarity with the Ivy League landscape, combined with Boynton’s national connections, could give Michigan a competitive edge in the Big Ten race.
The addition of Martin also brings a network of alumni and former players who may contribute to the program’s development off the court. As the Wolverines look to rebound from a transitional period, the blend of experience and fresh energy may prove pivotal.
